It's Okay To Not Feel Okay

There is a word in the English language called “Alexithymia” which means the inability to express what one is feeling and I think all of us go through this feeling. It's weirdly relieving to finally find a word for it. So “how are you?” “I’m good I guess” you say guess because you actually don’t know but you know you aren't doing fine, it's common courtesy to say good so you say it and have another soulless small talk and get on with your day

So what should you do when you feel this way? Move on?Dismiss the feeling and hope you won't feel the same way the next morning?

Here’s how I’ve learnt

  1. Accept the feeling- More than anything accept that you feel this way and accept it, take it all in

Sometimes it's helpful to not keep dwelling why you feel this way , you will figure it out later.

For now, grab a drink, wrap a blanket and do whatever makes you feel warm and cozy

  1. What If you feel restless?

If your brain is having countless thoughts and spiral into an endless spiral of thoughts you’d rather avoid and you feel restless, Do something- anything that makes you feel that it could clear your head

Maybe a walk? If facing people feels like too much

Stay in, Take  a shower, maybe play some music

If your mind feels cluttered, physically cleaning your space can help ( It’s my go to way)

  1. DON’T FAKE IT-

Don’t socialize if it feels like too much, watch a sad movie, cry if you feel like. There’s a psychological term called “ Catharsis” it means the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions.

So whatever your means of catharsis is, go ahead, do it

  1. Know that it gets better

REMEMBER that although you may feel this way right now, you will feel better eventually you will find hope and it will fall into place, one by one.

“If you don’t have hope, you don’t have anything”
